The Defense Department Contracts Mandatories
Most of the time, as we look for contracts whether from private institutions or from the government institutions, it is normally recommended that you should know policies and procedures that one has to follow for a successful contract. Therefore, when it comes to the defense department contracts there are various requirements that are demanded from the prospective contractors. It is important to note that the procedures and requirements may be a little bit strict considering the intricacies that pertain to the department and at the same time, it is a precarious department where all measures have to be taken to ensure there are no breaches in the security system. In other terms, as contractors you should be able to understand and follow the instructions which are:
a) The first steps will involve the verification of your product or services as well as where they fall in the North American Industry Classification System -NACIS - or the Federal Supply Class or Service -FSC/SVC-. Most of the time a product identification code will have to be established which is a nine digit number or the Data Universal Number System -DUNS- which is obtained through Dun and Bradstreet. Otherwise, it is normally advised that you register your company or business with the Central Contractor Registration Database where there will be a matchmaking of the contracts for your services. The reason being it will be much easier for the contractor to get their payments electronically. Otherwise, most of the time the clients have to be familiar with the Federal Acquisition Regulations -FAR- where there are policies and terms of services that have to be understood.*
b) There is also a classification of the vendor services such that if your main interest is to provide vendor services you will need a Contractor and Government Entity (CAGE) code whose core business is in coding the domestic businesses or the NATO Contractor and Government Entity -NCAGE ? for the international vendors. Unless your company or business has the number it will be hard to register with the Federal Business Opportunities Website.
c) There are several agencies in the defense department such as the Air Force, Defense Information Systems Agency, United States Special Operations Command and the Navy amongst other agencies. Depending on the type of services, you will be offering it is important that you verified the type of service that is most appropriate for the kind of service you are looking for.
d) There are also preferences made to certain people as far as businesses are concerned such that there are those businesses that will take precedence over others owing to being under privileged. For instance, the women owned, service-disabled, or any of the underprivileged businesses run by any of the mentioned categories.
